The Mozambican economy grew by 3.2% year-on-year in the first quarter, according to the country’s National Statistics Institute (INE).
The positive change in the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) was recorded both year-on-year and on month since the beginning of the year, according to the figures seen on Monday by Lusa.
The government forecast economic growth of 5.3% for this year, a figure that Finance Minister Adriano Maleiane admitted to Lusa in April could be lowered due to a drop in coal production but to higher than forecast by the IMF.
The IMF expects growth of 2.5% in 2019.
The United Nations lowered its growth forecast for the Mozambican economy to 3.4% for this and next year, compared with a previous forecast of 3.8% this year and 3.9% in 2019.
