- CCC is yet to announce successful nominees in rural areas
- The process was due more than two weeks ago according to the party’s initial reports
- Zimbabwe is edging closer to 2023 harmonised elections
Harare- Zimbabwe’s main opposition party, Citizens Coalitions for Change (CCC) has dismissed allegations that the party is struggling to have candidate representatives in rural areas for the upcoming 2023 general elections as people are scared of exposing their alignment to the party.
This comes after a local paper, Newsday Zimbabwe published a story caring the headline CCC struggles for rural candidates (‘CCC struggles for rural candidates’ -Newsday Zimbabwe) on the 25th of April 2023.
This was further cemented by Hopewell Chin’ono, a prominent social media journalist who said he published the same news concerning CCC struggles before but faced backlash.
“When I reported this story last week, I was called a liar, someone even said I had a dirty agenda. It is fascist to stop journalists from reporting the news because you don’t like the content of the news,” said Chin’ono.
However, the deputy spokesperson of CCC, Gift Siziba dissed the news as fake and invalid as NewsDay chose to write a biased story.
Commenting on Chin’ono’s Twitter post concerning the NewsDay publication, Siziba said, “Mr Problem of Newsday decided to write the story with a misleading headline despite that we gave him the official position.
“The story remains untrue, misleading and not factual,” said Siziba.
Siziba added, “After the Validation of Vetted candidates, we shall announce the successful candidates.”
CCC was supposed to announce successful candidates nearly three weeks ago. However, to date, the party hasn’t announced anything.
Zimbabwe is heading for general elections this year, before August as the current sitting parliament expires in July.
Parties are expected to submit the names of candidates who will represent them in councillor and MP positions.
ZANU PF has a strong support base in rural areas which the opposition party is trying to penetrate.
The ruling party, ZANU-PF had already finished the process.
