• ZIMRA has set guidelines for tax return deadlines concerning disposable plastic bags and fast food sales
  • These guidelines stem from the 2025 budget presented by Minister of Economic Development and Investment Promotion, Professor Mtuli Ncube
  • A 0.1% tax on fast food and a 20% tax on plastic carrier bags sales

Harare-The Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (ZIMRA) has established guidelines for tax return deadlines related to disposable plastic bags and fast food sales.

These guidelines follows the 2025 budget presentation by Minister of Economic Development and Investment Promotion, Professor Mtuli Ncube where he introduced a 0.05% tax on fast food sales which was later reviewed  to 0.1% and a 20% tax on plastic carrier bags.

This tax applies to major food chains including burgers, hot dogs, shawarma, French fries, and similar fast foods, aiming to address  rising health concerns associated with consuming highly processed foods.

The plastic carrier bags tax is to reduce plastic waste and promote biodegradable packaging.

He also proposed exempting supplies of recyclable plastics from withholding tax, provided they don't exceed US$5,000 annually

Tax returns are due on or before the 5th day of the month following the transaction.

If a transaction occurred in January, the return would be due by February 5, and any related payments must be made by February 10.
