Harare– CBZ Bank, Zimbabwe’s largest financial institution by deposits and assets, has appointed Valeta Mthimkhulu as its new Managing Director, marking a significant milestone in the bank’s leadership journey.

Mthimkhulu steps into the role with a wealth of experience, poised to steer the bank toward continued growth and innovation in a dynamic economic landscape.

In 2024 CBZ was the most innovative Bank, trailing only behind First Capital in ESG according to Equity Axis Research.

Mthimkhulu joins CBZ Bank from ABSA Botswana, where she served as Director of Retail Banking, overseeing key operations and driving customer-centric strategies.

With over 20 years of banking expertise, her career includes a 19-year tenure at the former Barclays Zimbabwe, where she honed her skills in retail and corporate banking.

She also held the position of Regional Head of Corporate Affairs, showcasing her ability to navigate complex financial ecosystems and foster stakeholder relationships.

Her appointment follows the departure of Gift Simwaka, who stepped down as Managing Director in March after a brief six-month tenure.

Mthimkhulu’s extensive experience positions her as a formidable leader for CBZ Bank, which plays a pivotal role in Zimbabwe’s financial sector.

The bank, known for its robust asset base and wide-ranging services, including retail, corporate, and digital banking, faces both opportunities and challenges in a rapidly evolving market.

Mthimkhulu’s track record suggests she is well-equipped to address these, leveraging her deep industry knowledge and strategic vision.

Her experience at ABSA Botswana, where she championed retail banking innovations, is expected to influence CBZ’s approach to enhancing financial inclusion and modernising its services.

Her leadership comes at a time when Zimbabwe’s banking sector is increasingly competitive, with digital banking and fintech innovations reshaping customer expectations.
