• Electricity generation at the Kariba Hydroelectric Power Plant has reached 485 megawatts
  • Today's output increased to 1304 MW from 910 MW yesterday
  • Lake Kariba's water levels rose to 9.6% on 3rd March 2025, up from 6.17% on 3rd February 2025, attributed to increased rainfall activity

Harare- The electricity generation at the Kariba Hydroelectric Power Plant almost tripled on the 4th of March to 485 megawatts (MW), marking a nine-month record high since June 2024.

This has increased today’s output to 1304 MW from 910 MW yesterday.

The rise in electricity generation was due to lake Kariba water levels that have gradually risen to 9.6% on the 3rd March 2025 from 6.17% on the 3rd of February , attributed to increased rainfall activity according to the Zambezi River Authority.

However the new water levels remains below from 15.36% recorded in the same period last year.

This decline, which has seen the water levels fall to 476.89m meters from 477.71 meters last year, has resulted in a devastating reduction in usable live storage for power generation, shrinking to a mere 6.21 BCM from 9.95 BCM last year.

Off late, Kariba hydro plant with a capacity of 1050MW has been generating 185 MW a day.

The electricity generation increase is of paramount importance as it comes at a time when Hwange unit 7 went offline for Class B maintenance on the 2nd of March up to the 29th of March, taking off 300MW from the national grid.

Therefore the 300MW increase from Kariba will help curb the gap provided it continues.
