Harare – As the call for governments to tackle climate emergence and limit global warming escalates world over, the United Nations Zimbabwe (UN Zimbabwe), has urged the local business community to use sustainable energy that is environmental-friendly as a way to deal with the impact of the climate crisis, currently haunting economic production and the people's health.
In a Twitter post on Thursday, UN Zimbabwe emphasised the need for the industry to reduce waste, reuse and recycle as a way of waste management for the benefit of people and economy.
Emission of industrial gasses in the atmosphere and dumping of waste in water bodies has resulted in a huge concentration of carbon monoxide gasses in the atmosphere worldwide, resulting in various weather hazards such as droughts and cyclones.
Just recently, Varichem Pharmaceuticals, one of Zimbabwe’s largest pharmaceutical companies was fined $800 000 for dumping medical waste at an open space opposite its premises in the capital Harare.
Meanwhile, in the National Development Strategy 1(NDS1), the government emphasised that the economic recession sustained during 2019 and 2020 of -6% and -4% of Gross Domestic Product respectively as a result of the declined output in agriculture, was due to prolonged drought episodes and cyclones experienced during the period.
According to UNICEF, about half of the world's 2.2 billion children are already victims of the ongoing climate hazards due to climate change.
In July this year, Environmental Management Agency (EMA) sued some local authorities in Kariba for polluting water sources.
President Emmerson Mnangagwa will in October head for the United Kingdom (UK) to attend the Climate Change Summit.
