The ministry of tourism is targeting 2.5 million arrivals into Kenya from the current 1.475 million arrivals by 2022 and an 18 per cent growth to 1.8 million international arrivals by the end of this calendar year.
According to the cabinet secretary for Tourism Najib Balala, the ministry is targeting Sh200 million in revenue by the year 2022 with growth expected to come from China, as well as the US market after the introduction of direct flights from Nairobi to New York.
The Chinese market is expected to grow, with the ministry looking to tap into the country’s population of over 200 million people who travel out of the country.
He also added that they will be looking to get 100,000 visitors from China alone in the next two years from the current 70,000.
‘’The key issue for local travel is affordable travel cost which, why is the coast booming currently, because of the SGR, and the road network available at the coast. So as much as we are now investing in infrastructure the minute we have the SGR going to Kisumu you will see Kisumu then booming.’’ He said.
