Mozambique’s car imports in the first three months of this year were more than double those the same period last year, according to the National Statistics Institute (INE).

Without specifying the exact number of cars, the INE reveals that the increase was in the order of 124.4 percent. The purchase of parts for the automotive industry followed the same trend and grew by 52.9 percent, compared to the first quarter of last year.

In comparison with the fourth quarter of 2017, imports of car parts and cars increased by 25.4 and 21.1 percent, respectively.

At the end of last year, parliament approved a reduction in the import tax on vehicles less than six years old from 30 to 25 percent, maintaining at 30 percent the import tax for cars more than six years old.
