Vodacom will pay the Mozambican state US$40 million for the renewal of the license to operate in the country, the Mozambican National Communications Institute (INAC) announced yesterday.
INAC president Ema Chicoco said that the renewal of the license formalised in Maputo yesterday would allow Vodacom to operate in the Mozambican market for another 20 years.
“This type of license allows the development of all types of telecommunications services, regardless of the type of support technology,” she said.
Vodacom Mozambique president Lucas Chachine said that renewing the license reflected the Mozambican authorities’ confidence in the company’s ability to become involved in the development of telecommunications services.
“Vodacom has the necessary basis for developing quality telecommunications services in line with current requirements, and increasing the scope of its operations in the country,” Chachine said.
INAC figures indicate that Vodacom has the largest share of mobile data market with around six million customers, followed by Movitel with around four million and state-owned Mcel with just over three million customers.
