Zimbabwe Economic Review & Election Scenario Analysis July 2018

Overview 

Zimbabwe’s macroeconomic environment remains largely weak although pockets of positives have been noted since mid-year of 2017. This counterbalance has resulted in mixed interpretations on whether the economy is in progression or regression mode. This report will give highlights and a review of the macro environment over the 6 months period between January and June 2018.

Ahead of elections, it is imperative to review the political environment and proffer a scenario analysis on possible variables and outcomes on the upcoming elections. This line of review follows that possible outcomes from this election will determine the economic direction Zimbabwe will take. On the outset 2 things are very clear, an undisputed globally endorsed election outcome will result in an economic takeoff in the positive direction regardless of who wins the race between the 2 top contenders. A disputed election globally condemned, will result in a worse off economic outturn as confidence and flows subside. Review will of election scenarios will follow in part 2 of the report.
