A terminal for the storage and filling of domestic gas cylinders (liquid petroleum gas – LPG) will start operating in the port of Beira, central Mozambique, in May, project manager Luís Mavie told Lusa on Friday.
Mavie said that the project was being implemented by public company Petromoc, and should have started operating in January but was delayed by setbacks.
“Heavy rainfall delayed completion, but the infrastructure is now ready,” he said. All that remained to start operating the terminal was equipment testing.
The terminal comprises three tanks with a total storage capacity of three thousand metric tons of gas. It is expected to fill about six hundred cylinders per hour, or six twenty-five ton trucks per day.
The terminal covers 60,000 square metres in total. Work began in July 2015 and was financed by the Exim Bank of India to the amount of US$38 million (EUR 30.8 million).
Beira’s liquefied petroleum gas terminal is the country’s second, following similar infrastructure in Matola, Maputo province, in the south of the country.
