Electricity consumers in Mozambique will have another charge beyond the current ‘credelec’ rate to pay if one of the novelties in the proposed revision of the electricity tariff passes into law.
The Ministry of Mineral Resources and Energy proposes the creation of an ‘electrification rat’e to be paid by producers, transporters as well as individual consumers.
The Director of the Legal Office of the Ministry of Mineral Resources and Energy, Marcelina Joel, explains that revenues raised by the new rate will be used to expand the electricity grid to areas currently without access to energy.
The electrification fee will be added to the accounts of Mozambicans if the proposed revision of the Electricity Law is approved.
Another novelty is that the government intends to enable Mozambicans to get into the business of producing and transporting energy, which was already accepted under the current law but only through public tender and at the initiative of the state.
The current revision of the Electricity Law in Mozambique started in 2011, and the Ministry of Mineral Resources expects to submit the final proposal to the Council of Ministers by the end of November 2018.
