Russia considers Mozambique as a country of opportunity to accommodate its economic interests in the exploration of oil, gas, coal and gold, Russian Federation deputy minister of Natural Resources and Ecology Evgeniy Kiselev has said.

Kiselev expressed Russia’s interest in Maputo yesterday in comments to the press about the agreements reached during the meeting of the Intergovernmental Commission for Economic and Technical-Scientific Cooperation between the Republic of Mozambique and the Russian Federation.

He said that Russia had an ongoing project exploring Mozambican geology and carried out by the Rosneft oil company. “We have great experience and advanced technology in this area, which we have already put to work in other countries, like Cuba,” he said.

Kiselev said that, in addition to oil and gas, the Russian government would invite entrepreneurs to invest in the exploration of coal and other mineral resources, declaring that, as a geologist himself, he was sure that gold deposits could also be found in Mozambique.

“Other areas to be explored are transport, infrastructure, and the peaceful use of atomic energy in the health sphere and space, where Russia has a great experience to share with colleagues,” he added.

Mozambique’s deputy minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Maria Manuela Lucas dos Santos, said that one of the government’s priorities in this five-year period was the agriculture sector. The agreement includes cooperation in agriculture and food security and also in Mozambique’s rich maritime resources.

Deputy Minister Dos Santos said that a mixed Russian-Mozambican consultative team composed of representatives from various sectors of the Civil Service and business people were working on cooperation in various areas including diplomatic policy, finance, agriculture, mineral resources, transport and communications, industry and trade and oil and gas.
