  • China and South Africa drive global chrome supply
  • Zimbabwe positions itself as key chrome exporter
  • Infrastructure challenges constrain chrome export growth

Zimbabwe, a top supplier of chrome ore, is playing a critical role in the sector. According to the International Chromium Development Association (ICDA), China and South Africa continue to drive the chromium market.

In 2023, global chrome ore production increased by 4% year-on-year, driven by demand from Chinese smelters. Despite a slight dip in the first quarter, chrome prices are gaining momentum this year.

South Africa accounted for 17.8 million tonnes of chrome exports in 2023, while China imported 18.3 million tonnes. Africa as a whole accounted for 82% of the supply market share, with China holding 92% of the import market share.

Zimbabwe is well-positioned to benefit from the growing demand for chrome, with producers in Africa preferring chrome ore production over ferrochrome production due to favorable market conditions.

The industry faces challenges, including logistical constraints and muted demand in the EU and US.
