Harare – Bulawayo based personal care and agro-commodities manufacturer, United Refineries Limited (URL) has closed operations due to acute water shortages in the country’s second largest city.
The company manufactures Roil Cooking Oil, Sunshine Cooking Oil, Image Family Bath Soap, Vogue Beauty Soap, Star Laundry Bar and Roil Mayonnaise.
In a statement released on Tuesday, the Company said, “We regret to inform our customers, suppliers and stakeholders that we have had limited water supplies to our factory for the last 7 days and the situation has not improved.
“As a result we have had to temporarily suspend our factory operations as we await the situation to normalise”.
The company uses 150,000litres to 300,000 litres per day.
Meanwhile, according to a report by Bulawayo based publication, the Chronicle, Bulawayo is expecting to start pumping water from Epping Forest in Nyamandlovu as the Zimbabwe National Water Authority (Zinwa) has almost completed the drilling and equipping of the 10 boreholes that were under rehabilitation.
The project is expected to ease the Bulawayo water crisis and deliver an additional 10 megalitres (ML) per day to the depressed city’s water supplies.
The report says Zinwa has completed drilling nine of the 10 boreholes at Epping Forest while seven of them have already been equipped, ready to start pumping water to the city.
URL said, “We continue to engage Bulawayo City Council with regard to returning the situation to normality. We are aware this is happening as we prepare for the festive season stocking programmes and promotions.”
Whilst the water situation has worsened due to drought effects, government has also been blamed for failing to build new and upgrade critical water infrastructure.
