Rainbow Tourism Group’s digital forays sees income scale by 10%

The digital economy in Africa is expected to grow to over $300 billion by 2025 at an annual rate of 40% (McKinsey, 2013), on the back of massive mobile penetration, among other technologies. In light of this, it would be strategic for any 21st-century entity to find ways of playing on a digital front and leverage on the potentialities it presents.

Rainbow Tourism has been apprehensive enough to ride on the digital wave over the past few years through an initiative termed the RTG Virtual. RTG Virtual is a partnership platform between RTG and selected hotels, lodges and tourism activity companies in Zimbabwe, on the continent and beyond, which also develops their business capabilities and access to markets.

This model has seen RTG spread its geographical presence into areas it does not have any hotels through partnerships with small to medium hospitality players.

The initiative is premised on the philosophy around competition, whereby the Group co-operates with competitors to create a win-win relationship.

The avenue continues to yield positives for the group. According to the 2019 financials, the e-commerce channel registered growth in foreign revenue by 10% to US$2 million from US$1.8 million in 2018.

Through RTG virtual, the Group set up Heritage Expeditions (Private) Limited, a wholly-owned local tour operations, and activities entity. The company has already commenced transfer tours, quad bike safaris, white water rafting, packaging of third-party activities as well as invested in an adventure park at the Rainbow Towers Hotel in Harare.

In the United State of America (USA), the company has set up Rainbow Tourism Group Incorporated, doing business as Journeys by Exotic and wholly-owned by RTG Zimbabwe. This is an international tour operations entity in which the Company will be selling destinations around the world to Americans.

The Group launched the Gateway Stream, a mobile and web-based application in 2018. The focus in 2019 was to capacitate the Gateway Stream through recruiting hospitality products as well as users. The Gateway Stream aims to create booking convenience for every hospitality and tourism transaction that takes place in Zimbabwe and has registered over 7 000 downloads since its establishment.

In the most recent outlook, the Group Chair Mr A.J Manase said:

“The company will continue to deploy its resources towards supporting its key strategic pillars through the Capacitation of the Gateway Stream and Financing the growth of Heritage Expeditions Africa.”
